Dementia explained to kids

Never in human history have we lived so well or for so long and as a result of this the frequency of diseases such as Alzheimers Disease and other forms of dementia that become more common in old age, has increased with the aging of society.

And it’s because of this that children are more likely to come in contact with someone with dementia, either a family elder, a friend of the family or an older neighbour.

Now more than ever it is important that children have information available to them, information explaining the plight of dementia sufferers, explaining the symptoms and a little of the management and the likely outcome.

Parents often have limited information and understandably could find dementia hard to talk about to a child and more especially if it is a loved family member who is affected. Imagine how distressing it could be for a child to stand by helplessly, observing a loved one who can’t remember who the child is; where they are, what day it is, displaying behaviour totally uncharacteristic of their grandparent.

Children learn from stories and what better way to learn about dementia than through a story. A few years ago when there was no dementia information available for kids I wrote a little book and it’s now available as an e-book. The story looks closely at all the issues, sharing feelings of the child, his family, as well as the carer.

The book is also illustrated in a fun way, includes special notes for parents and teachers and local, national and international resources.

To all the children in the world whose families have been touched by a loved one with the diagnosis of dementia you have the chance to develop a greater understanding, awareness and compassion through the timely publication of  “My grandma doesn’t know me any more”.
